down to earth restaurant

Organic rattan sculptures shape the restaurant’s interior, seamlessly blending decoration with functional furniture. The result is a distinctive space where tropical outdoor vibes meet an artsy, retro-inspired interior—two contrasting elements that complement each other.

The rattan installation begins at the parking lot, using raw, unrefined rattan to create a natural look. As it leads visitors inside, the sculpture transforms into a refined, structured form, guiding them through the space.

The Story:

The new owners of an existing restaurant appointed me to design a concept that promotes healthy living and environmental awareness—without a bohemian or alternative feel. Inspired by Melbourne’s vibrant café scene, they sought a modern, artistic, and sustainable space.

Rattan as a Progressive Material:

Often associated with traditional design, rattan is reimagined here as a modern, sculptural element. Its flexibility allows for organic forms, even in compact spaces, proving its potential beyond classic craftsmanship.

Sourced from skilled Indonesian artisans, rattan is a highly sustainable alternative to wood. Growing back every six months, it thrives only in rainforests, adding economic value and incentivizing conservation. By incorporating rattan into this project, we not only celebrate its versatility but also support responsible forestry and craftsmanship.
